Elle Singapore’s next season-esque editorial

23 Nov

Elle Singapore totally brings IT with this freshly whimsical editorial. It’s so refreshing when an editor breaks out of the pack and does something different. We were getting lost in the sea of sequins and body con style dresses heralding the December party season. Right now, all the magazines, websites, blogs are awash with sequins and glitter fare, the norm for this time of the year; but someone in Singapore stepped out of the box of glitz.

Aptly tagged Swept Away, it features feminine, whimsical style dresses and an aura more fitting for Spring/Summer. The bright hues, florals and floaty, romantic dresses tick all the next season trend boxes; says Spring 2011 has come early in Elle Singapore.

The brilliant styling was done by Daphne Chen, modelled by Sasha Luss and lensed by Zhang Jingna.

Rocker chic a la November issue of Spanish Vogue

27 Oct

Rock chic is a style I find incredibly attractive. From the simple, basic ways of wearing the look to the more complex, full regalia of studded jackets, spiked boots, leather pants, the very best of Balmain. Personal style wise, I’ll fall somewhere in the middle. I like the edgy yet feminine allure of the look.

Vogue Spain did a brilliant, quite artistic interpretation of this look in the November issue. The styling featured rock chic looks across the spectrum from intense to simple but it captured the essence of the style pretty well.

The models, Iselin Steiro and Toni Garrn rocked heavily sequinned jackets and pants, leather and blazers against a posh ‘musical’ background. Loved the role of electric guitars in the shoot. The brilliant photography was by David Vasiljevic and styling was done by Barbara Baumel.

Anne Hathaway in Vogue US

18 Oct

I had seen the mini buzz about how much Anne Hathaway looked like Eve Mendes on the cover of Vogue, but nothing quite prepared me for the high fashion retro glam I found in the editorial.

Anne Hathaway Vogue US cover_1

This was Grace Kelly meets Princess Diana at the ball, with an extra dose of glamour. She was dripping in gorgeous jewels, wearing satin gloves and elegant dresses reminiscent of royalty. The lovely dresses were by the likes of Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and Isaac Mizrahi.

Vogue US Fashion Director Tonne Goodman did the picture perfectly glam styling and photography was by the legendary Mario Testino. Theme of the editorial was ‘Happily ever after’ starring Anne Hathaway and the dashing French actor Raphael Personnaz.

She came across as gorgeous and absolutely elegant, but then seeing her acting history, this is one role she has no problems playing. Amazing editorials part 1: Tao Okamoto by Solve Sundsbo in Vogue China

11 Oct

I’ve come across some breathtaking editorials from the arsenal of Vogue magazine. The Vogue approach is reminiscent of high fashion art, with great creative concepts that leave you jaw dropped and gaping. It goes beyond styling clothes cum shooting with iconic photographer to creating an almost poetic display of style.

So, when the beautiful Japanese model Tao Okamoto was photographed by the brilliant Solve Sundsbo for Vogue China – the September 2010 issue – you can only imagine the outcome. It was beyond fashion, it was artistic and very captivating, there was something subtly futuristic and almost abstract about each picture. I could buy one of these printed in life-size and set up in my living room.

Even more Fifties Fever

6 Oct

Fall has been awash with gorgeous, ladylike fifties fashion and this has produced some of the most glamorous editorials depicting that era. Since the fifties is my favourite era, I’m savouring all of the attention it’s getting and celebrating with multiple blog posts. I’m refusing to get tired of having blog posts on the 50s!

Well, Vogue Australia did this ultra elegant 50s feature in the September issue. It’s quite interesting to see that dresses from the Prada and Louis Vuitton Fall RTW collections have been featured over and over in most of the shoots.

For this feature, Model was Catherine McNeil and Photographer was Nicole Bentley.

Global reign of Fall’s Ladylike Chic

5 Oct

A mighty feat for the Mad Men series, Fall 2010’s key silhouette is feminine, hour glass, circa 50’s-60’s fashion. Most major magazines are featuring this trend for the October issue and I am totally loving it. Viva Ladylike chic!

So, Elle Korea did a feature tagged ‘Amazing Grace’ with American model Hilary Rhoda. Photography was by Ryan Yoon, styling byVittoria Cerciello.

Haute 50s elegance in Harpers Bazaar en Espanol

2 Oct

With the recent ‘Mad Men’ frenzy that gripped the fashion industry, my beloved fashion era -the 50’s- has scored its place in the limelight. At least until Spring 2011 when the 70’s take over -if fashion week trends are anything to go by. The 50’s represented the peak of ultra feminine fashion, with the hallmark hourglass silhouette, cinched waist and full skirt pioneered by Christian Dior in the early 50’s. It was the era when women wore their hats and gloves religiously and looked to fashion icons, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe for inspiration.

It’s my favourite era because it celebrated the feminine silhouette, was elegant, graceful and all things ladylike. I was excited to see Prada and Louis Vuitton showing 50’s inspired fashion on the Fall 2010 runways. I guess we have Mad Men to thank.

So, Harpers Bazaar en Espanol has decided to give me and all 50’s fashion lovers a treat in the October issue. They celebrate 50’s elegance with this absolutely exquisite editorial featuring model  Michelle Westgeest and photography by Benjamin Kanarek. With the model wearing an original 1957 Dior dress, they couldn’t have paid a better homage to that era.

I still think her name is weird but well she’s right beside Tyra Banks in my supermodel hall of fame.

This is a retrospective of an editorial shoot she did for the September issue of Allure Magazine. Photography was by Thomas Schenk.
