The Most Fashionable Bloggers Episode 1

8 Apr

There are thousands of bloggers on the blogosphere and it’s not news that bloggers are taking over the global fashion industry. Bloggers inspire collections, co-design lines for designers, style editorials for fashion magazines, feature prominently in fashion week, act as consultants for designers and are a huge part of the advertising for fashion brands.

With so many blogs to choose from, there are many different styles, aesthetics and sensibilities, so when I find a blogger who makes my eyes round as saucers due to their AH -MAZING style, it excites me to no end.

So I was doing the blog round up the other day and came across the extraordinarily stylish Wendy Nguyen of Wendy’s Lookbook

Wendy Nguyen 1

She basically ticks all my boxes, tres femme, multi faceted expressions of style, loads of versatility, classy and tres chic dressed up or down and she’s got a sweet personality that shines through. Reading her story in the About section, there was even more jaw dropping. Wendy grew up in foster care, worked and fought hard to get into college, has worked with incarcerated youths and still volunteers at an organization that provides mentorship to previously incarcerated youths. Totally wowed! and that trumps the silly notion held by weird people that fashion aficionados are automatically flaky people.

Wendy also proves the point I’ve made several times that fashion is an artistic expression. I can’t help but quote her, ‘ I find inspiration in art, nature, culture, architecture, food, people, and music. And for me, fashion is a compilation of all that. Fashion is a vehicle for me to play with shapes and colors in order to uncover my personal style. Like music and art, fashion and style are forms of creative self-expression where each of us are architects creating unique designs and looks.

Pardon my excitement, it’s not everyday you find a fashion soulmate *grinning*

So, for that great style that has me doing the couch jump, check out after the jump. You can see Wendy sharing great fashion tips on her youtube chanel as well.

Time Magazine’s ALL Time Fashion Icons

4 Apr

TIME magazine just compiled a list of 100 fashion icons, featuring fashion inflencers and icons from as far back as Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel and Audrey Hepburn. Complete with short stories of influential designers, stylists, editors, photographers, models and muses, there are the familiar faces and the unfamiliar plus the (concisely written) stories behind them.

Of course you know Anna Wintour was on that list!

Very interesting read, seeing some of the stories cements my belief that fashion and the fashion industry is waaay beyond the wearing of clothes, it’s art, it’s creativity, it’s passion and expression. Totally inspiring and a must read for everyone with  more than a casual interest in the fashion industry. Trust me, there just might be some names you’ve not  met before.

You can find the story here

It’s been one year, perhaps time to change

19 Sep

Yeah, it was about a year ago that I decided to start blogging. Following a ‘just do it’ challenge from the facilitator in one of my summer fashion classes. A few of us did start a blog and sent out links to each other.

The class portrait. 'Just do it' facilitator is the bald guy right in the middle, lol

Very nostalgic feelings I have of the early days of StyleFest. I was on a mini sabbatical so I had quite a bit of time to do tons of research and find the best of fashion from around the web and more. I was a committed fashion blogger :-)

It was Spring 2011 fashion month back then and i blogged away to no end. Rushing to see all the shows barely hours from when they went live and staying up till the early hours of the morning, blogging away my thoughts and opinions. Those blog posts earned me a job at a fashion magazine you know? Lol

It was simply unforgettable. Simply unforgettable. That entire summer (and year for that matter) was a moment in time that I would relive again and again.

A lot has changed since then. I’m back to work, attention is split between fashion and so many other things. Right about now, i’m asking myself questions, trying to revive the many facets of my creative life that just do not need to be buried in favour of fashion, even though fashion remains dear to my heart and is being explored further as we speak.

So, what’s the point of the reminiscing? Here it is: Style Fest will be evolving from being a fashion only blog to a full lifestyle blog. It will be about everything I used to be and i’m reviving and everything i’m going to be. I used to be a Poet, Baker, Singer, Writer and I’m dabbling into photography (a Nikon DSLR coming in the near future). Quite a few facets but hey, the call is to place a demand on life and the thing about seeing in colour is that there are so many expressions.

StyleFest will be about Life the way i See it, including all of the above plus Fashion, Home style, Healthy eating, every thing I pass by on my creative journey. And because Style is all encompassing, there’s no better home for all that content than here. I planned to start a different blog called Pink Tapestry ;-) **yeah, wince and roll your eyes Big Sis, LOL** but decided to just make my home here. No need to do split personalities.

I clink glasses with every reader to a beautiful, stunning, picturesque journey ahead.

Let me end this new chapter intro with these poignant words by Steve Jobs, they are excerpts from the Commencement Address he presented to the 2005 graduating class of Stanford University:

Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Cheerio folks, see you more often :-)

The Art of Luxury Time-telling

6 Apr

The world of luxury fashion is one that I find intensely fascinating and so breathtaking. Luxury brand manufacturers take the best materials you can find on this beautiful earth and craft incredible things out of them.

From plush fabrics to diamonds and precious gems, I mean, the earth is full of beautiful things waiting for this type of expression. What’s the point of a diamond in raw form below the earth, when it can be made into a swash buckling Chopard watch?

I think I’m kinda digressing? Lol

So, the biggest and the best watchmakers in the world gathered at the Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show in Geneva, Switzerland late last month. And you can only imagine what went down, tons of sophisticated collections and innovation.

Check out some of the simply amazing selections from some of our favourite designer names. Please read the descriptions of the watches, so luxuriously poetic, lol.

Doesn’t matter if you can’t get one of ’em, it’s great to admire excellent craftsmanship and the beauty of creative genius.

Lanvin Porcelain dolls: Who says big girls can’t play?

21 Jan

Mr Alber Elbaz clearly begs to differ, even though he proposes a different kind of play. One that includes collecting limited edition Miss Lanvin dolls.

Designed by the beloved designer himself in collaboration with Chinese craftsman Franz, the collection features 800 pieces of 6 doll designs each season. All in hand decorated porcelain mixed with varying materials.

Prices range from $435 to $610 with the newest season at the highest price. This will make a brilliant (perhaps Valentines?) gift for any fashion + art inclined collector.

They are a genius work of art and intensely reflect that fun yet über chic Lanvin aesthetic. No big surprise though, the fruit never falls too far from the tree. I selected 10 of my favourite below.

Style Resolutions for 2011

7 Jan

WOW! It’s been such a long blogging break for me. Not good!

Quite a few things have happened since I’ve been away. We crossed into a New Year for instance. So, better late than never. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The fashion wheels never stopped turning, regardless of the holidays. There’s been all the buzz about rock bottom sales and the excitement about Spring 2011 fashion is getting more intense every day. I can’t wait to blog about my favourite Ad Campaigns.

In the spirit of catching up, I’m thinking about New Year resolutions. Every year, I have Style resolutions and this year is no exception.

I’m sharing mine for this year, you can adopt them, just in case somehow you haven’t got any. Some are reminders, some are new challenges. Here goes:

1. This year, know your body shape and stick with the right clothes for you.  Now, let’s face it, the body con is just not for everybody. What matters in the end is how you look in what you’re wearing, not the elements of the outfit. Knowing your body shape helps you know how to play with proportions and balance out your look. And there are so many options for what to wear, it obliterates any excuse to wear the wrong thing.

body shape

There are quite a few guides online for knowing your body shape and what to wear. You can look up http://www.bodyshapefashionadvice.com/questions.php

2. Wear clothes that fit. A close follow up to understanding and dressing for your body shape is wearing clothes that fit you. Tight clothes revealing unflattering lumps and bumps should be banished this year.

A style savvy lady knows that clothes should skim, not squash her body; all detailing should lie flat and not be scrunched between body parts. There was so much talk about Spanx and body shapers last year, they’re a wise investment, they do help to smooth out the shape under clothes and they were not made for the plus sized only.

Victoria Beckham is one style icon who makes no mistakes with fit

3. Be more adventurous with style: This year, more than ever, fashion needs to be about fun. Experiment with something you’ve never worn before, a new cut, new color or fit. Try out a kimono, high waist pants or a bright yellow dress. Spring 2011 is full of colour, that’s a good opportunity to do something fresh and new. What’s the fun in wearing the same old stuff year in, year out. It becomes a drag.

4. Accessorize Accessorize Accessorize. This is almost cliché but definitely worth repeating. It’s amazing what one layered necklace can do to a basic tee. Accessories can transform in ways beyond the imagination, they are a work of art in themselves.

5. Keep it appropriate. There’s a new obsession with nudity in fashion, it literally went crazy late last year, what with the Vogue Paris calendar!  I thought fashion was about the wearing of clothes???? Well, we are not going down that road! Not with the tons of things there are to wear.

Carey Mulligan was Harper’s Bazaar’s best dressed woman of 2010 and no one dresses more appropriate than this young British actress. We all can borrow a leaf this year.

6. Have the courage to express yourself fashion-wise.  Once again, fashion is about getting dressed but it’s also about having fun. It becomes bland when everyone plays safe and no one dares to wear that turquoise silk blouse with the pink tulle skirt or the huge head-dress. Daring to express your individuality with what you wear is so liberating. There’s no case for blending with the crowd, that just stunts your inner Picasso.

7. Work your wardrobe. Who says you need to have a separate work wardrobe, day wardrobe and party wardrobe. The fun is in the mix and match. The same top or dress can go across the work, day out, night out spectrum. It all depends on how you work it. Given how much is spent on these items, they need to work as hard as possible.

I have an example here of what you could do with one lovely top.

One top, 3 looks

These here are the seven gems of wisdom I will be seeking to live by Style-wise in 2011. Really looking forward to it being an exciting year for fashion. Have a truly wonderful, fulfilling and expressive year!

Emmanuelle Alt: Parisian Chic Supremo and Global Style Icon

19 Oct

This week, I will be celebrating my favourite Parisian style queens. I’ll kick off with this lovely lady.

Emmanuelle Alt, world famous style icon, Parisian Chic personified, ultra polished and extremely chic. She works as Fashion Director of Vogue Paris alongside the legendary fashion icon Carine Roitfeld, she’s also stylist to designers like Isabel Marant.

Emmanuelle Alt_1

Emmanuelle literally owns the rock chic, edgy, balmain-esque  look. She obviously refreshes the style with various stunning pieces in the ensemble, but she looks super stylish and effortlessly chic ALL the time. She’s one of those people who possess innate ‘non-contrived’ style.

I literally have never seen her in a dress, in bright colours or obviously feminine outfits; with Emmanuelle, it’s noir and edgy. Her make up is au natural, almost looks like she rolled out of bed looking fabulous. There’s a certain je na sais quoi about her that enhances the stylish aura.

And it is so beautiful that she’s also a doting mother, with a lovely daughter who is obviously a mini fashionista already. What with a mom like that.

Viva Emmanuelle! She’s in my style icon hall of fame, right beside Carine,  Giovanna Battaglia and a host of others.

I shall close with this beautiful quote from her:

‘Forget trendy designer labels. Jeans, a sweater or a t-shirt worn under a jacket that seems welded to you. When it’s just right, when you don’t see the effort, it’s irresistible’

Totally agree with you Emmanuelle.
